Important information for all of our parents:
Netflix—“13 Reasons Why”
Some of you may be aware of a new series that was recently released on Netflix within the last week called 13 Reasons Why. This fictional series is based on a 2007 book by Jay Asher and depicts the story of a high school girl who leaves behind tapes after committing suicide. These tapes show events leading up to her suicide and the decision to end her life.
Netflix released all of the episodes at once, and it has already become one of the most viewed series. There are concerns that this series is not the "suicide prevention tool" that some may think it is and that it could trigger students who might be struggling. The series is very dark, intense and includes some very mature scenes as well as language that is not appropriate for students. Students who hear about, or watch this series may feel confused as a result of how the series addresses topics such as bullying and depression.
We encourage you to have a conversation with your child(ren) about the seriousness of mental health issues. Encourage them to reach out to any adult when they are feeling overwhelmed. Remind them to speak up if they have concerns or feel worried about a fellow classmate or friend.
We strive to make our district a place where everyone feels safe, respected and proud. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s school or guidance department.
